Eduard Sorokin
Hello, men ! In some articles about WW2 history, and history of particular aircraft's types, I read the info, that Curtiss P-40 and North American P-51 fighters were flown by Norwegian pilots too. Is it truth or false ? Had the RNoAF those types in using ? Or, maybe, those fighters were used by Norwegian squadrons of RAF ? Wait for answer. Best regards, Eduard. Kyrre Ingebrethsen
P-40's were flown by at least one Norwegian in Afrika and there are a couple of threads on this subject here in this forum. Norwegians flew P-51 with some of the British Squadrons, in 19, 234 and 65 Sqn colours. Unfortunately the threads are in Norwegian but please post your questions here or in the respective threads. Stein Meum
4 Norwegians flew P-40's (various versions) during WW2: Sgt. Larsen in 2 Sqn (Army Co-op), F/O Ravn in 250 Sqn, F/O Kopperud in 250 Sqn and F/S Langaard in 4 S.A.A.F. Sqn. Mustangs: 2 Sqn: Tufte-Johnsen, Jean-Hansen, Hagerup and Liby. 19 Sqn: Westly. 65 Sqn: Nyerrød. 122 Sqn: Nyerrød and Austeen, 126 Sqn: Austeen. 168 Sqn: von Tangen. 234 Sqn: W.H. Christie. Christie was also Wingco Flying in No. 51 Wing at Andrews Field and the Hunsdon Wing. Birksted (a Dane who served with R.No.A.F.) was Wingco Flying in the Bentwaters Wing. Einar Sandvik
The RNoAF did however never operate these two types, neither during WW2 nor after the war. Einar S
Eduard Sorokin
Hello, men ! Thank to all for detailed info ! Kyrre Ingebrethsen wrote: P-40's were flown by at least one Norwegian... Dear Kyrre ! First question: - As I understood, all these squadrons were exactly BRITISH squadrons, with British personnel, and only some pilots were from other nations, isn't it ? And second question: - Had the airplanes (or any of them) of Norwegian pilots, which are named in whole this thread (also see info from Stein Meum) any kinds of national insignia, signs, emblems, etc. (even small symbols - like small Norwegian flags on fuselages of some aircrafts of 330 (Norwegian) Sqn RAF) ? Regards, Eduard.
Stein Meum
One Kittyhawk Mk. III (P-40K) had a black and white eagle painted on the nose while another Kittyhawk Mk. III (P-40M) had the eagle and a small Norwegian flag. Photos in Warbirds of Norway's Newsletter for 2008. Stein

Stein Meum
AFAIK, none of the P-51's carried any personal markings apart from a Mustang Mk. III and a Mk. IVa that carried Wingco Werner Hosewinkel Christie's initials, WHC, on the fuselage. Stein
